Horseback archery has roots that trace back thousands of years, with its origins primarily among the nomadic tribes of Central Asia. These cultures utilised mouinted archery as a vital skill for hunting and warfare, allowing them to be highly mobile and effective in battle.

Today, horseback archery is experiencing a revival as a sport, with organisations promoting it as an equestrian discipline. Modern practitioners often participate in competitions that emphasise accuracy as well as speed, with tracks reflecting the historical roots of the sport while adapting to contemporary standards.
The British Horseback Archery Association was founded in 2007 to promote the sport in the UK. The BHAA is itself part of British Equestrian as well as the organisation recognised in the UK by the International Horseback Archery Alliance. Cotteswold Mounted is the oldest horse archery club in the country and we have been affiliated to the BHAA since we were founded in 2015
We organise competitions and traiing throughout the year and are well represented at the National Championships every year. Our members also regularly compete abroad and several have been selected for GB teams at the IHAA’s European Grand Prix competitions.
